"I carry your heart with me, I carry it in my heart"
On sisterhood, and sibling relationships.
Dearest,
Today, I have a poem for you that is inspired by the movie ‘In Her Shoes’. It is a rom-com but that follows two sisters, Maggie and Rose, who are drastically ‘opposite’, as they figure out their jobs, love lives and family history.
At the end of the movie, Maggie (played by Camerzon Diaz) reads out the poem [i carry your heart with me (i carry it in] by E.E Cummings for her sister Rose (played by Toni Collete) at the wedding altar. I love that scene. It punctures my sisterly heart. And it throws me in the mush of all the love I hold for my baby sister. So here’s a poem for her, and all the siblings out there. Warning : Nostalgia!

CARRYING
I carry your heart
(i carry it in my heart) - E.E Cummings
I carry you : in the packet of candies distributed at school. Under the glittery strap of your unicorn bag. In the familiarity of dal-ki-roti for lunch. At the basketball court, where you clapped as if I had Micheal Jordan’s arms. Of the proud fingers you pointed at me, when I took a lay up, claiming to your friends– that’s my sister, she’s me. Amidst my colourful pile of hand-me-downs. Atop your miniature hands that held, then sniffed those hand-me-downs. In between your slender fingers that still reach for my closet (I repeat, my closet.) Under our polka-dot black blanket where you exhale, I inhale. Coiled in the septum hanging on the bridge between your nostrils. During the devil’s hour when our cackles awaken East Delhi witches. Between the froth of my yellow-ing teeth. Sometimes, stuck in my swollen gum, that sometimes bleeds.

2. If you want a respite from typical romantic tropes of ‘girl meets boy and they fall in love’, please watch ‘In Her Shoes’.
If you further love the idea of sibling relationships, here is another gem ‘Song One’ starring Anne Hathaway. Get a sneak peek through the trailers if you’re interested in a mushy Saturday movie night.
See you next Saturday!
